Transmission Replacement
Sent to Car Experts February 07 08:31 AM

I had asked a question about my transmission a couple weeks ago. Well, it broke on friday. I took it to a mechanic to get all the codes read. None had anything to do with the transmission. The mechanic drove it and advised me that the clutches were in need of replace. I got a second oppinion which confirmed the diagnosis.

Therefore, I have purchased a used transmission with 58,000 miles from a vehicle just like mine and plan to replace the old one with the used one this weekend. The work will be performed by my Nephew and I. We are pruchasing the book and he has changed a transmission in another vehicle before.

My question is with regard to suggestions on the easiest way to remove the transmission. I know that because of the size of the engine V8 and its placement, we will have to drop the motor or frame to get to the transmission. I understand that once we get to the transmission, the change out is not too bad, however getting the engine and all to fit back to normal due to the position is a bit hard.

So any suggestions would be great.

Also I got the other codes from the computer. They are as follows: P1744 TCC System
P0455 Evap System - Gross Leak
1928 VAPSII or VAP511, Input Ground Short

Could you tell me how to make these repairs and if it would be better do to while the transmission is out or wait till another time?

Is there a kit for replacing the transmission with regard to the seals, gaskets, hoses, wires, ect.....

Sorry for so many question, I am just scared the job will be over our head and I will end up half finished and hit a wall causing me to have to pay a mechanic to fix my mess and install the transmission.

Do you prefer the Haynes or Chilton manual?

I asked a question on here previously and was advised to get the codes for the vehicle to determine the cause of my transmission trouble. I did that and none of the codes delt with the transmission. It went out on 03Feb06, so I had a mechanic check it out and had a second oppinion which both confirmed the need to replace the clutches in the transmission. So I am replacing the transmission the weekend.

You are correct this is a rather large job to be doing in a weekend. You are looking at around 10 hours flat rate. This is the time it should take someone who has done several of these transmissions. The P1744 is a transmission code. It is for the TCC (Torque Converter Clutch) system. This is for the torque converter to engage the internal clutch. There is a solenoid inside the transmission that controls it. The problem could be the solenoid, the valve body, wiring or the torque converter itself. Since you are replacing the transmission you should be ok unless it is a wiring issue and it is external to the trans. The P0455 means you have a leak in the fuel tank emmision system somwhere. Since it is a gross leak more than likely it is a fuel cap leaking, but it could be a broken line a bad solenoid or wiring. This can be done after the transmission job and won't hurt to continue to drive. The 1928 VAPS II code is for the steering system. I will include the diag below, but it looks like you will need a scan tool to diagnose the first test. Maybe the second test will determint the cause. Check this with the transmission out, because it is in the rack and pinion steering, which is hard to access with the transmission in place. It is almost as hard to pull just the transmission alone as it is to pull the engine with it. Just make sure if you are doing this on the ground that you have all wheels blocked so it cannot roll (I am speaking from experiance as I watched one roll while my Dad was under one helping me put a trans in, Fortunately I had a engine crane holding the engine up and it held the car up just as it touched his chest). As for the haynes or chilton out of the two I perfer the haynes, but Alldata is better.
