I'm driving my car and then the dashboard shuts off.

I'm driving my car and then the dashboard shuts off. Gets to a stop light and the car dies. Before that I'm driving slow down to a stop and battery light comes on gives it a little gas and the light goes off if I don't it shuts off. Is this the alternator?
