hello my name is luis my neighbor across the street has

Sent to Car Experts January 09, 2006 5:41 p.m.

Hello:
My name is Luis.
My neighbor across the street has a Camaro 1992 and will not start. Had to use jumper cables. The mechanic tried to crank the engine using a cable conected to the starter motor. Witch worked, but no luck. The dush-board has a blinking lite. INSF set or something similar. Escuse my ignorance. When I tried to jump start that engine did not here any click ot tick. Rely switch or anything else. The security lite comes on for a second and cuts off. The only needle does not move is the gasoline level. I am not a mechanic but I have worked on my own cars. Would you have an idea of what could cause the problem.
Maybe is the Driver.

Optional Information:
1992 Chevrolet Camaro V8

Already Tried:
Battery dead, jumper cables, fuse box hanging, plus it was raining coul not check for loose connections or anything ellse. The owner said that he had to try several times before it ever turn over. To the point the trick wont work any more.

ACCEPTED Check Mark

starting from the beginning , if you had to jumpstart the car at the starter to get it to crank , the ignition switch is obviously not working.what happens when you turn the key to accesories ? do you get lights coming on ? when you turn the key to start and get nothing 1. check battery and cables. good battery and ground....2.check fuses , fusible links (especially to starter) ground wires and small wire to starter usually pink. this small wire should get hot when key is in crank position (all the way foward) if it doesent check fuses and fusible links. get it cranking with the key , not by jumping to starter direct. good battery fuses relays and fusible links but still no crank would tell me 3 things. bad starter ,which you know isn't it already because you jumped it direct and it cranked...2 a factory security ignition cut off needs to be deactivated....3 BAD IGNITION SWITCH. the insf you're talking about may be a factory security ignition cut off. you need to get a manual or contact dealer and find out how to shut it off. finally after all this is done if you can't crank this car with the key.... replace ignition switch. once you get it cranking correctly , getting it running is a whole different story ! i'll be glad to reply when you get to that point ! good luck.

Thank you for the tips. and sorry for the delay.
The owner took a look at the ignition switch and did not find a loose connection, but I do not believe that He used a tester. Did not find a bad fuse and did not know at that time of any fuse link. .but now He does. And does agree about the ignition switch to be defective. And they need to buy book for the car. I allways do. For example: It saved Me more than $300.00 on the intake manifold gasket I had to replace. The lower intake gasket was liking water preatty bad.
And the cost close to $34.00 Happy New Year
