REPLIED Check Mark

CHECK ENGINE LIGHT

That is a warning light that comes on if the computerized engine control system detects an engine performance or emissions problem. Also called the "malfunction indicator lamp" (MIL).

Your first step is to have the computer scanned to retreive the trouble codes that were set when the check engine light came on. Those codes will get you pointed in the right direction. With a 1996 or newer car and you have an AutoZone in your area, they will read them for free. It can come on for any of hundreds of different causes from any of the systems that the computer monitors. Some are very important and some not as serious. It will continue to come on until the problem is resolved.

I don't live near an AutoZone or near reliable/trustworthy automotive service. (I really miss the US.) It's a 2004 with only 16K miles. Most of the driving has been under 50 MPH and in salty air. (I live in The Bahamas.) Any things I could change/check without going beyond basic maintance?

Thanks

ACCEPTED Check Mark

No, you have to read the codes to have any idea what your even dealing with. Maybe somebody over there has a generic code reader. They aren't very expensive.
