1996 Corsica - Engine light stays on.

1996 Corsica 2.3, 4 cyc. 138,000 miles. The engine light stays on. Loud clicking noise under hood. Have replaced fuel filter, checked timing chain. which is fine. Changed oil and oil filter. What could be causing the engine light to stay on and the clicking noise?
When driving the car it looses speed then picks up. Thought it was bad gas so replaced fuel filter. But the engine light still stays on and tapping clicking type noise remains.Optional Information: 1996 Chevrolet Corsica 2.3Already Tried: changed oil filter, changed oil. changed fuel filter. checked timing chain and bracket, checked motor mounts.
