the temperature gauge in my car chevy lumina shows that

The temperature gauge in my car (97 chevy lumina) shows that the engine heats up rapidly, sometimes engaging the HOT light while driving, however the heater is VERY rarely hot, if at all. I've checked the radiator fluid level and mix, and I still can't diagnose the problem. I bought a new thermostat but I can't find any information on how to change it. I can't afford to have it done for me, any suggestions?
