1990 toyota 4runner-why does the water pump stop running ...

1990 toyota 4runner-My car doesn't have heater and I'll went and bought a new radiator and thermostat replace it and still not gettingn any heat. And I notcie that when I put the thermostat in the water pump stops running and my car get over heat. And when I take the thermostat out my car don't get over heat but when i put it back my car get over heated again.
