my car died while I was driving it, and now it makes a grinding noise when I turn the key, could it be the starter?

Several things it could be, but the started would not have made it die. Therefore something else is likely the problem and it is causing starting problems also.
Its hard to tell you anything without the year, make, model and any other details you can provide about both the car and the problem. Don't be shy. The more info you give us the better.
To begin try checking your battery cables, to see if they are clean and tight. If you can have someone test the battery. This is the time of year for them to fail.
