Question

corolla burns oil

Sent to Car Experts November 07, 2005 8:48 p.m.

My 2000 corolla consumes oil. Lots of black soot on rear bumper, coming from exhaust pipe. Bought car used last year with 90,000 miles. Been doing it since I purchased. Heard that a valve or something similar is causing ? Looking for answers other than worn rings.

Is the car consuming oil?Is the check engine light on?Are there any other symptoms we need to know before we continue?Have any repairs been done or any other diagnostics been performed?

Car consumes a quart of oil every 300 miles. Check engine light is on and diagnosis code is for O2 sensor replacement. Spark plugs were changed 3 monthe ago due to running rough and showed serious oil burning.

ACCEPTED Check Mark

If the pcv valve is stuck open you could be pulling oil into the engine from there. However if that's not the case the rings could be worn or stuck causing the oil to be burned.Valve seals and or valve guides could also be the cause. There are not very many reasons for what you have as a problem. If it's more than a pcv valve you can try some upper intake cleaner from a parts store to see if the oil rings are sticking.Other than that it means an engine repair of some kind.
