Question

how do I remove the center console fron a 1997 Toyota Camry?

Sent to Car Experts October 04, 2005 12:32 p.m.

I want to replace the radio. I need to remove the console. It appears to be in two pieces. I remove the two bolts in the storage compartment and the back piece will lift a little but it still seems to be attached to the front piece. How do I proceed.

I would try taking a look around near the floor, I'm not really sure what the inside of this car looks like, but I know sometimes when taking off center console pieces on other cars there have been bolts down low near the carpet and other times even behind the top lip of the ashtray or pull out cup holder, if you can't find it once you check those places, you might have to actually take off the front piece that you said it seems to still be atached to. Also, sometimes they don't use all bolts, it can be a combonation of bolts and clips that lock into place with a little pressure. You may have to investigate a little bit to make sure that the resistance you're still fealing is in fact locking clips, if you think they are then the console piece shoule just pull right off, and then "pop" right back into place. Don't pull it unless it feels or looks like it is going to give, you don't want to break anything. Give it a look over, get back to me if you need more help, However, if my information has helped you out, please remember to click the "accept" button. It's always appreciated.

The back piece of the console must be removed before the front piece can come off (in fact I really want the front piece off). I can find no bolts on the back piece other than the two inside the compartment at the back. The resistance I feel when I pull may be just clips and 8 years of plastic (with heat, cold, split pepsi) stuck together but it may be something more. If it is more, I would like to know what to do about it. If it is not more I would feel comfortable just pulling harder. This car is in fantastic shape and the last thing I want to do is visibly damage the center console.
Thanks,

Since you want to remove the front section, pop up the shift indictaor trim piece, using a small pocket screwdriver it should pop up if I remember correctly. There may be some screws under there holding the rear section to the front section. If you see nothing on the sides of the console, there is usually a removable cover that hides screws or it will be underneath the prndl indicator.

I'll try popping off the shift trim--I hope you remembered correctly. I could see no other panels for hidden bolts/screws. I'll check this out and get back to you. Thanks.
