I have a 97 ford aspire that has a stumble that local mechanics can't seem to figure out. Only noticeable when stopped??

Reply to Gene's Post: It has an intermittent rough idle in gear and also park. It had a tune up almost a year ago but had occasional shudders soon after. We have had these symptoms for 4 years. The check engine light comes on infrequently. I've had to disconnect the battery to reboot it. Computer read outs did not identify the problem?                                    Thanks for the response!

If the check engine light is coming on, it is indicating a problem, not all code scanners are created equally. If your local parts store cannot identify or retrieve a trouble code, you will need to bring it into a dealer for a more detailed diagnosis.Next time the light comes on, leave it on so they can retrieve any codes. You can have a distributor problem to something simple as a vacuum leak.

Reply to Gene's Post: The check engine light comes on rarely. A ford dealer's mechanic said that that when it misses badly enough it trips the light. ( He is the one who told me to disconnect the battery to reboot.) He did not have a soulution based on the error code. Car did not miss when checked out. Seems to start stumbling after it gets warm. Maybe he never let it warm up?
