Question

fuel valve code engine auto idle olds

Sent to Car Experts September 14, 2005 7:56 p.m.

1991 Olds Cutlass Calais Quad-4 2.3L 'fast idle' problem. My auto idles at approx. 1400 RPM, The 'chk engine' code is 35. I have replaced the IAC valve, ECM, fuel pressure regulator, fuel injectors, and checked obstructions/vacuum leaks around the throttle body, and minimum idle speed adjustments. The combustion pressure in 3 out of 4 cylinders is normal, however the no. 1 cylinder was about half of the others. I don't know if this has any bearing on the problem. Please help!

ACCEPTED Check Mark

High idle is most always caused by unmetered air being introduced in the intake somewhere of and IAC that isn't responding. I would say at this point, you need a good scan tool to see what the computer is seeing. Find out if the IAC is trying to bring the RPM down and whether it has reached it's limits or not. I would also clean the throttle body inside with some carb cleaner and an old tooth brush. Be sure to get the backside of the throttle plate also.

I already cleaned the throttle plate with carb cleaner. The engine also idles very rough. Could the problem be with the IDI ignition assy?

Not likely. Check things like the EGR valve sitcking open. The rough idle is most likely the one bad cylinder you have. Not much you can do about that.

This vehicle does not have an EGR valve. Now the car has no power when I drive it. Also the DIS (driver info. sys.) indicated 'low fuel range' even with a full tank. I think it's time to take your advice, and take the car in for a good scan tool check.
