gas idle car ford 2001
Sent to Car Experts September 14 12:36 PM

I have a 2001 Ford Tauras. Ramdomly when starting the car, it will idle down to nothing and shut off. If I keep the gas accelerated, it will stay running, as soon as I remove my foot, it goes off. I have had the tune up at $218.00, and 2 garages tell me nothing else is wrong. I don't think this is normal to be randomly stranded somewhere for hours waiting for my car to keep running. What advice can you give me?    Lisa_Wilt@davidrwebb.com

Reply to Hammer Time's Post: Sorry, I had trouble getting on line.
Today again I drove to work with no problem. I drove home, no problem. However, when I took my son to practice, my car left me stranded.
I turned the key, it started briefly, and idled down and would not stay running. It seems like it wants to, but shuts right off. It randomly will not remain running when I start it. Yes, it initally will start, but shuts right back off. It will only keep running when it does this, if I hurry and press on the gas and keep my foot on the gas pedal. As soon as I let off the gas, it shuts off. Again, this is a 2001 Ford Taurus.
Any advice you can give me would be greatly appreciated. I have been to the garage and after 218.00 spent, I still have the same problem. They said that nothing was wrong, but I needed a tune up. I got a new fuel filter, air filter, PVC valve, and oil change. Wow what a crock! And 2 times this week I was left stranded with a young child trying to find a ride home. Also, I wondered if you could return the reply to wiltgirl34@wmconnect.com and CC: me at Lisa_Wilt@davidrwebb.com. Then I can check the response while I have break at work. Thank you kindly.

It sounds like you have a bad IAC (Idle Air Control) that is intermittantly sticking and not responding to computer commands to raise the idle. It's very easy to change and looks like a variation of this picture. You'll find it on the throttle body held on by two 10mm bolts.
