what happens when the oxygen sensor on my car goes out?

my car is running weird .. i can be driving down the road and the car just slows down till i let off the gas and then hit the gas agian and it goes for a short while.. can the o2 sensor be doing this my check engine light is also on.. it does not do this first thing in the morning not till it has warmed up...

Having and O/2 code does not automatically mean the sensor is bad. What is the exact code being set?

Reply to Hammer Time's Post: sorry i have just fixed the car myself and figured it out i couldn't pull the code due to one of the wires to the test connection were cut off.. so now i have to replace that..
