I recently bought a 1993 Ford Explorer. I have to do a lot of mountain driving for my job. On the first day my drive was up one steep, winding mountain road and back down. The drive took about 45 minutes. It was just me in the car and I wasn't towing a trailer. I overheated and ruin the entire braking system. I have driven the same road in a Nissan Pathfinder and never had any problems. My trusted auto mechanic of almost 10 years now told me to slow down and down shift when going down hills. He replaced rotors, calipers, pads, hoses, everything with high quality parts. It cost close to $600 for the repairs. I took his advise to heart and really slowed down my driving. After 7,000 miles the pads were shot. He checked everything, replaced pads, and said everything is mechanically fine and again told me to slow down and down shift. I have about 1500 miles on the second set of pads and you can still smell the pads burning even on short trips. I don't know what to do.
