Scared to drive car

Sometimes my car sounds like it is going to stall on me or shut down while i'm sitting at a light or stop sign and when I start my car I have to let it run for a little bit just to get the rpm up to 1. For example, Sitting at red light rpm's shoot down to 0 so i hit the gas to keep my car running. What could this be?
