Battery/ Alternator Quandry!?

Sent to Car Experts September 04 08:33 PM

My car will start w/ a jump, but will not even turn over or is extremely faint in turning over w/o a jump. I was able to get it to a local Auto Parts store to check the battery/alternator but at 1st it didn't seem to be reading correctly so the "Tech" re-adjusted the hookup to the alternator positive cord, I took it back up to 2000 rpm's and then I accidently let off and the car died. She (the Tech) said that it was reading upwards of 1600 something (amps perhaps?) I am not sure id this was due to a bad hookup or if my alternator/ voltage regulator and or my battery is bad. I also had charged it prior to the trip for approx. 3 hrs and got nothing. I had to jump it everytime it has started today. Am I missing something? What does it sound like to you? What can I do to troubleshoot before I start to take it to a garage/ start taking battery/ alternator out to test. The car is a FWD 2001 Chrysler Sebring LX 2.7L.
