Question

94 camaro 6cyl.

Sent to Car Experts September 04, 2005 7:46 p.m.

I have a 94 camaro 6cyl. the problem is i have a jumpstarter when i use that the car starts and all my electric works, fan, lights, a/c, as long as i keep it connected to the battery. as soon as i take it off and use any electric like even the parking lights, the car goes totally dead no power at all. I put a new alternator in, it still does the same thing. the battery is only 5 months old and i took it and got it checked twice and both times they said it was good. i also changed my whole positive cable 5 months ago.

Go to the big post on the back of the alternator and see if you have 12v with the key and engine OFF.

Those numbers don't sound right at all. That alternator isn't really capable of 20 volts. It should be battery voltage when the engine is off and 13.5 to 14.8 when running. You'd better check it again.

It sounds like your fussable link id burnt out Check the voltage accross the battery with the engine running. If you don't have the same 14.9 or close, try running a jumper wire from the big post of the alternator to the positive post of the battery. If it suddenly starts charging, the fusable link is burnt out. You'll find it at the starter.

Usually at the starter, there are multiple other small wires attached to the positive terminal of the starter. Some cars have a main terminal closer to the battery, on the fender well that they come off of. Follow the ppositive battery cable and you should see them branching off along the lline between the starter and the battery.
