my car cuts off and the message reads "check gauges"

This has happened when I have my air condition on, and even when it's not on. This morning I looked at the temp gauge and the arrow was on cold, later as I was driving it was in the center, between cold - hot. My car seems to tremble a little when I am just sitting, or standing still.
