new engine?

I was driving on the freeway when my car began smoking. It didn't die then, but when I pulled over and turned it off it never restarted. My coolant was extremely low and I was not aware that I had a leak. My father seems to believe that my engine got fried and I need a new engine (he is in no way shape or form any sort of a mechanic), but I was wondering if there were any other possibilties to what the problem may be.
