Question

Clutch problem?

Sent to Car Experts August 16, 2005 2:23 p.m.

I just had my clutch replaced on a 2000 Mercury Cougar. When I got it back the car grinds in first gear. All other gears work fine. I've been told that they didn't bleed the clutch, but the shop is saying it doesn't need to be bleed. They say it is the brass syncro ring in the unit?. What should I do?

Did it ever do that before the clutch replacement?

No. The clutch did go out though. However this is a new problem that I noticed right after I got it back. I've been taking off in second gear lately to not aggrivate the problem.

If the problem wasn't there before, then it has air in the system. The synchros didn't just go. They wear very slowly unless somebody severely abused it on a road test. Either way, it's their responsibility.

PS, taking off in second will do great have to your clutch. Just put it in second and then shift to first and it will go in easier.
