Transmission Problem

Sent to Car Experts August 15 10:37 PM

1998 Ford Windstar GL transmission not engaging; Car has 117000 original miles. I have not been able to reset the service engine light in three weeks-have added vacuum lines, o2 sensors and a camsensor and sensor rod. Could these be tied together? The trans. shop is recommending a $1,700 rebuild. Thanks-Sy

Reply to Hammer Time's Post: the 02 sensor codes came up and more importantly, the intake manifold runners code is appearing-they are not working so the mech. thinks it is one of the three solonoids the main or two side units or the computer itself. He can't dedicate 8 hours to find the problem and I'm not sure I can afford the repair! Thanks for any help you can provide. Sy

The codes are specific to which side. It's not really that complicated. The runner controls do have a pretty high failure rate but other things i have found are

  1. Sometimes the clip for the arm just falls off. You can feel it if you put your hand on the control
  2. Another thing I've seen happen is when someone will do an induction service and instead of cleaning all the gum out, it softens it and makes it real sticky and causes the flaps to stick in the manifold .

If you snap the throttle, you should be able to watch/feel them work.

Reply to Hammer Time's Post: Since I'll have to go back to my mechanic or to Ford at the worst-do you know what the specific codes to each side are? My garage feels they don't have sophisticated enough equipment or time to trace the problem. Is there anything to do with the solenoids I aske about previously?

The solenoids are what I referred to as controls. Yes, they do go bad among other things. I think your shop's problem is that they don't know how to diagnose it so they're quoting outragous prices to scare you off.
