Question

Rebuilding or Cleaning Engine

Sent to Car Experts August 15, 2005 7:33 p.m.

I'm looking for a good video on rebuilding a Ford 289 V8 engine
for my
1966 Mustang convertable. Is there such a video that would
take me step
by step? This car sat in an old barn for 20 years. It needs to be
cleaned up before it can be started. I want to try to do it myself.

It is all original and complete.
My brother passed away 2 yrs ago
and left the car to me. Everything is there. All numbers match
etc... My husband & I are doing a complete restoration. The
floorpans were badly rusted, we are taking an auto restoration
class at our local junior college. We are in the process of
replacing the inner rocker panel and floor pans. The car is
completely striped down. By trade I have a video business so I
have been video taping every step of the way. We pulled the
engine and transmission out and it is sitting in our garage. The
engine is on a stand. I want to find a good video to clean &
rebuild the engine. One that is step by step. (so that a beginner
could follow the instructions) The car had 73000 actual miles. I
took the valve covers off and the oil has turned to black sludge.
The car ran fine 20 years ago. He just went to store it in a barn
and it sat there for 20 years. He had bad health. And before he
died he asked me if I'd like to have it! I helped him pull it out of
a barn & then it sat for another 6 months. After he passed away
my husband & I put a battery in and everything worked as far as
the top went down and came back up, the lights, the radio, the
horn, etc. We turned the key just to see if the ignition would
work and it started to turn over. We didn't want to start it we
just wanted to see if it would turn over and it did.
If you have ever seen DIY network they have automotive
programs but it seems that they are limited in time and they will
get ready to go to commercial and say "while they were breaking
they took care of some aspect" that i would have liked to have
seen. You know what I mean? So if you know of any good
video's or classed that i could take it would be greatly
appreciated. Thanks, Mary

Since you are in the video business maybe you can strike a deal with a machine shop or someone who rebuilds engines. Offer to do a video documentary on how they do it and then they can have the finished product to show their customers or sell on the open market. Even though its not likely that they will be rebuilding a 289 for a mustang, I am sure at some point they are going to rebuild a Ford V8 or some other V8 engine. Most V8 engines are the same except for a few minor differences.. like some V8's are overhead cam while others use pushrods.

So if someone is willing to make this type of arrangement with you, any V8 rebuild will give you enough visual information to know what to do.
