(Not a Car Question?)

misfiring engine.

I drive a 2001 Jetta. My check engine light has been on a recently my car gave up. The diagnostic machine reads random multiple misfires, misfires in cylinder 3, 4, and 2. What could this be? The car will start, but then kind of putters down in RPM's. Given a little gas, the RPM's sometimes go down, but sometimes kick in and rev up. I've replaced the fuel filter, had the fuel injectors cleaned out, new spark plugs and wires. The new wires made a bit of a difference, but still not driveable. Thinking maybe it could the the ignition coil or the catalytic converter, but wouldn't the catalytic converter register in codes on the diagnostic machine? What does it sound like to you? I have ordered a new ignition coil but before I install it I'd like to know if its a waste of money. I'm really strapped and have already spent $250 on this problem. I know the VW dealership will cost me an arm and a leg.
