My battery light is coming on and I don't know why

I own a 2001 Chrysler Sebring LX. I have 58,000 miles on it. Recently, my battery light came on, and it won't turn off. I assume that it is a warning light, but am not sure for what reason.

Any ideas? I have looked in my owners manual, but there are no trouble shooting tips listed.
