69 mustang 302 engine quits
Sent to Car Experts August 03 04:09 PM

my 1969 mustang 302 2bbl quits running after driving for two or three miles -- as if it has run out of gas. After this is will only run 1/4 to 1/2 mile. If I give it a shot of starting fluid, it starts right up and runs 1/4 to 1/2 mile. I have replaced the fuel pump, fuel line from tank to pump, fuel filter, carburetor, and removed and cleaned the fuel tank. Is there anything I should check outside the tank to carb fuel system? I admit that I haven't yet changed the pump to carb line. I will at least blow the line out tonight, but I don't have much hope. Got any ideas? Additionally, the motor runs great, without missing when it does run.

It is pretty obvious that you are having a problem with fuel supply. You have to start testing instead of replacing. Get a glass jar or bottle and run the line from the carb into the bottle and crank the engine to see if you have sufficient fuel volume. 15 seconds of cranking should pump close to a quart. If it does, you can start looking at the carb. If it doesn't try running a hose into a gas can from the pump and see if it pumps that way. Process of elimination will find the problem.

Reply to Hammer Time's Post: The pump seems to make a good volume of fuel with good pressure, though I don't have anyway to measure the pressure. The car will run at idle for as long as I have let it. I guess it has run for 10 minutes. I will measure the volume at 15 seconds. Why would it idle for such a long time, but run out of fuel after 3 minutes at 40mph?

I had to have tech support reopen your question because it closes automatically when you accept an answer.you have to reopen it if you want a follow up.

That question is real easy. It just uses less fuel at idle. If you are getting good volume out of the hose, the needle and seat in the carb may be stuck and the top will have to be removed to check it. Don't attempt that unless you have some experience with carbs though. They are delicate and full of little parts.

Reply to Hammer Time's Post: I looked at my 69 shop manual to find the expected volume of fuel -- it was 1 pint at 500rpm for 20 seconds. I pumped for 20 secs with the coil wire off so just the starter was turning the engine and got less than 1/2 pint in 20 seconds. (Do you know approximately how fast the starter and a good battery turn the engine?). Can the pump be ok and a restriction of some sort between the tank and pump cause the volume of fuel pumped to be low?

I wasn't aware that accepting the answer closed the question. I just wanted to make sure that you got the payment even though I had more questions. Live and learn, eh?
