Question

1986 Honda Accord rough idle, misses

Sent to Car Experts August 03, 2005 12:38 p.m.

1986 Honda Accord DX carb 2bbl manual, 110k:
Problem: rough idle, misses during driving
Have service manual. Did all the carb checks in the
manual with a vacuum pump/guage, and found bad choke
pulloff and some other problems.   Replaced carb with a
rebuilt, starts great, but rough idle persists (and now
fast idle drops away at the first touch of the gas),
although accelerator pump seems to be snappier.
Also seems to miss when driving, but not with a regular
rhythm, car is driveable but lacks power. It does
idle, though. Before replacing carb, replaced plugs,
plug wires, cap, rotor, oxygen sensor, both fuel
filters. Just overhauled exhaust, no effect.
Passed emissions with flying colors on the old carb,
even with rough idle. Checked EGR valve, ok. Checked
vacuum advance; passes tests in manual. No vacuum
leaks I can find anywhere.
Timing belt was replaced around 90k, idle was ok then.
Adjusting timing does not improve rough idle.
Thanks for your help. Will pay if answer
saves me time. Will pay more if answer is
right on. My next move is to check the
distributor and coil. Then adjust valves.
If you think it's the distributor, what should
I do? The manual shows how to adjust valves.
How do I do a compression test?
Thanks for your help.
