what kind of car is it? year, make, model. could be something as simple as low on transmission fluid.
have you checked the fluid levels?
is it an automatic or manual transmission?
does it happen on acceleration or as you're coasting.

this is 1994 Chrysler LeBaron automatic this happen while cruising and if you accelerate during the problem time there is a delay between the engine acceleration and the wheels thumping into sync.

this car should be equipped with an overdrive transmission. try driving at low speeds under 45mph in drive or 3rd gear. if the problem goes away, the lock-up torque converter solenoid might be sticking 'causing the transmission to slip.
