brake trouble

i have a 89 hyundai sonata that lately when i slowed down, it would make a loud grinding sound. then yesterday, as i was driving, i heard a loud click while i was accelerating and then repeated clicking noises. the noises eventually stopped but then the brake light went on and my brakes barely work. i have to press all the way in to get just a little response from them.

i checked the brake fluid and it had a little bit left and then i checked about 20 minutes later and there was nothing in there. what could be wrong with my car and do you think it will be very pricey? if you do think you know what is wrong, what iwll i need to buy to fix it? thanks a lot.
