1999 Ford Contour engine stumble

Sent to Car Experts July 31, 2005 8:28 p.m.

Hi, I have a 1999 Ford Contour w/4 cyl engine. Lately it keeps throwing the code 1131--Lack of HO2s11 Switch, Sensor indicates Lean. I haven't too long ago changed the plugs, wires, and coil pack. Would this code suggest an O2 sensor gone bad? The engine has 152,000 miles and no O2 sensors have been replaced since I had it (I am the only owner since new). The car definitely runs worse with the a/c running. The engine stumbles at idle or running 60 mph. Today, the wife said it was less noticeable. It is a problem that may happen every other day so that is what confuses me the most. But, the code is always the same. Any suggestions would be highly appreciative. Thanks, Mike

REPLIED Check Mark

when was the last time you changed your fuel filter? an intermitant problem like your explaining is either a fuel restiction or a vacuum leak, which may be caused by the EGR valve. a bad O2 sensor will always show bad. have you had the codes cleared or is the check eng. light on all the time.

Hi Chris,
I have an OBDII scanner and cleared it myself. No, I have never changed the fuel filter on that car. Matter of fact, after sending you that email, I got to quizzing the ol' lady about where she's been buying gas....We put a few dollars of gas from a different station here in town and the car seemed to run better. She probably had water in the fuel or as you suggested, a faulty filter. I'll change the filter and see if that helps. I think she just wants a new car....(-: Thanks man and I'll approve the money to go through, Mike
