Question

2002 dodge intrepid valve body

Sent to Car Experts July 26, 2005 2:49 p.m.

I have a 2002 Dodge intrepid. When driving it the engine light is on and when I accelerate the RPMs do not go down after driving. When going to get it looked at, the Dodge dealership said it needs a new valve body and it will cost $700. Is this legit, and why does it cost so much?

REPLIED Check Mark

A valve body is a transmission component. You may be refering to a throttle body. If you have an Autozone in your area, the will read the codes for free and we can advise you better then.

I'll start over from the beginning. My engine light came on and my 2002 Intrepid would occasionally jump when I would press down on my brakes. When I would accelerate after that the RPMs would continue to go up with the MPHs. They would never fall back down. The only way to correct the problem was to turn off the car. The first dealership I took it to said it was only a software problem and they didn't have the correct tool to fix it. That tool I believe was a P1776. The problem kept getting worse so I took it to a different dealership and they said that there were some error codes that were causing the engine light to illuminate. They cleared these codes and the car was alright, but they said the error codes might pop up again, in which case I would need a new valve body. On my way home the engine light illuminated again and the car jumped again. Sorry for being so long-winded but my question is-- Is this a simple software problem that could be fixed at a small fee with a P1776 tool, or does the car in fact need a new valve body? And if so would it cost over $700? A helpful answer would be greatly appreciated!!

ACCEPTED Check Mark

P1776 is a code not a tool. It is a transmission code and the valve body could be the correct diagnosis. The price sounds about right. If it sets again, you may have to change it. They will know best because they already know all the specifics of the diagnosis.
