Question

Car will not Start

Sent to Car Experts July 02, 2005 10:09 p.m.

I have a '94 Ford Tempo that won't start with a key- only get a click sound from the engine computer control module - I can start the car by passing the start motor ignition relay by the battery with a screwdriver across the relay posts. I replaced the starter and ignition starter relay but no improvement. All other systems seem okay. Engine is the 2.3L 4cyl. Any idea what might be the problem?
Thank you.

ACCEPTED Check Mark

Check the fusible links at the starter relay where you did the bypass to start. They come of the battery side of the relay and become yellow. One or more of these wires have burnt out.

Sometimes you can find them by pulling on them the burnt ones stretch.

Marc,

The fuses were fine. The problem was the neutral safety starter switch. I was able to start the car by jumping the starter solenoid relay when the car was is neutral. Replacing the switch attached to the T/M and shift linkage solved the problem. Fortunately, it was in a location where I could get easy access to replace.

Thanks for responding so quickly. I appreciate you tokk the time to consider my car problem.
