Question

fuel or spark?

my '86 mercury grand marquis stopped in mid stream today, and now will not restart. starter and battery seem strong, i pulled a plug and during turn-over i could not necessarily see it delivering any spark..i had just been hauling things out of the trunk and noticed the fuel pump reset switch was up and so i reset it, but didnt help problem...it has never done this before, and of course it had to happen when im 1000 miles from home~ can you guys please tell me how to diagnose the problem so i can restart n become mobile once again?

I can try to walk you through diagnosis, but you might be willing to try a shortcut if you want to gamble a few dollars and possibly save some time.

About 90% of the time, the symptom you describe on this model is caused by a failed ignition module. If you feel like guessing, try replacing the ignition module and see if the car starts. If not, let me know what kind of test equipment you ahve to work with and I'll see what I can do to help you figure it out.

so if i go to the parts store asking for a 'ignition module'...they will know what i am asking for i hope..is that correct..the car is 20 miles outside of town in hot arizona so i need to take all parts i will need..is this module different than a rotor?..thanks so much
