Question

Altima motorized seat belts

Sent to Car Experts June 08, 2005 7:29 p.m.

93 Altima with motorized front seat belts that both just quit working. Bad relay, if so where is it? Or computer problem (passive belt controller under center console)? Maintenance manual is no help.

So I've determined that the "passive belt controller" under the center console contains the computer microchip that controls the motorized seatbelts, and also contains the relays that power those belts. There are no user serviceable parts inside the controller. NISSAN wants $430 for a new one, they think highly of it. Salvage yards have many available, starting at $35. Can you guess which one I'm buying?

My guess would be the used one that may be bad also.I wouldn't buy anything until I've verified all power and ground circuits for the entire system. However I don't have a wiring diagram for your car and thats why I never answered your question. So you have been given a free hint of where to start looking.

Thanks DAVO. My Haines manual doesn't even mention the passive restraint system, let alone diagram the wiring. So for 35 bucks a pop I'll buy a used controller or two, til I get one that works, then I'm selling the car anyway.

If you get a used controller from the junk yard and it doesn't work take it back they shouldn't give you a hard time about it . They usually will just give you another one.
