What makes a cars engine dump its oil?

1989 pontiac firebird
car has 180,000 miles on it
has been leaking a little oil recently
drove it this morning with no problem
car wouldnt start later in the day, acting as if its flooded
engine turns over, battery is new
son peeled out once today
theres a puddle under the frontend
can see that oil has ran down one of the middle hoses
aux coolant tank is empty
