Cars that sit tend to develop a list of problems. Having it given to you should make you more at ease with throwing some money into it. Heck, I replace a lot of stuff on used cars I buy (and I buy a lot) just to freshen them up and "zero out' regular maintenence items - like belts, hoses, oil, etc.
I think the fuel tank should be drained, which requires removal of the tank in most cases, to get the old fual out that doesn't burn right and tends to varnish up parts. A bottle of fuel injector cleaner in addition to fresh fuel will work wonders.
It's also possible the alternator is ka-put, and should be replaced. While running the car with a dead alternator drains the battery down to around 8-9 volts, afterwhich the car will stall and not even try to restart. That's because the low voltage isn't enough to support the ignition coil, and not nearly enough to support the starter.
So, I'd recommend changing the fuel, replacing belts if they look bad, perhaps a fresh tune-up, and at very least - have the alternator tested. Most auto parts stores (especially the national chains like autozone and advance auto) will do this for free.
Let me know if you still need help, I'd like to see you get this beast up and running.
