hi i have a 1996 cadillac sedan deville and i'm not ...

hi i have a 1996 cadillac sedan deville and i'm not sure if i need a new alternator or a ignition coil or if it's something else. when i went to start my car up it didn't start and the battery was dead so i replaced the battery and it started up as normal but when i turned it off and came back later to turn it back on it wouldn't start up at all. When i put my key in the ignition i get all the light and radio but when i turn the key to start it up every thing goes dead. What going on?

Is there any way for you to check the voltage while the car is running?

yes it says 11 to 12 volts

no the car will not start right now but when i turn the key to the acc possition i get light and the radio and power and the voltage on the dash says about 11 to 12 volts but when i go to turn it all the way on every thing goes off until i turn it back to acc

You will have to jump start you car to get it running again. When it is running we need to know what the voltage is?

it will not start when i jump start it but i can get the voltage when the key is turned to acc and it says 12

When you turn the key to the on position does the security/anti-theft light come on? If so does it turn off if you leave the key on?
