If the negative cable was "hot" to the touch, this entails the electrical system has a heavy load/resistance possible from the starter, cables, and the battery itself. If the starter has never been replaced on this vehicle and it has over 80,000 miles than this is a good possibility, since they are common to fail. Make sure the connections at the battery are tight, and the battery doesn't smell like rotten eggs, or has leakage anywhere; if so replace the battery. Also, the possitive cables on these get excessive corrosion, so deep the entire cable has to be replaced, and sometimes the starter as well, due to corrosion at the terminal. The starter on the Northstar is located in the intake manifold and requires approx. 2.5-4 hours to replace, unlike your standered block mounted starter which calls for approx 1.0-2.0 hours to install.
