I have a 1990 Cadillac Eldorado. While driving the battery ...

I have a 1990 Cadillac Eldorado. While driving the battery no charge light came on. Then all lights went out; dash lights, head lights, everything. Car was still running. Just put in a new alternator, battery and water pump. Any suggestions as to the problem?
