I am have a 88 cadillac fleetwood de elegance, and i have taken the steering wheel off to get into the key ignition. Anyhow, the problem I am having is I am trying to get the lock plate to compress with the spring. I have the tool that threads on the steering shaft, but when i try to press the plate down, all that is happening is the shaft is coming out (yes it a telescoping set-up). How do I lock the shaft if I can lock it at all?

You will have to make the pin it doesn't come in the column.It will be a tool that you add to the center of thesteering shaft so the telescopic feature doesn't work during service.
