I HAVE A 2001 BUICK CENTURY ,WHEN I START CAR WHEN COLD IN MORNING
1ST TIME STARTED THAT DAY THE STARTER GRINDS BEFORE I CAN RELEASE
KEY,ONCE CAR IS WARM IT IS OK.

The grind only happens when the car starts before you release the key?

It sounds like you have a bad starter. On the starter, the drive gear is designed to lock in one rotating direction and freewheel in the other when the engine starts. If it is not freewheeling then the engine will spin the starter when it is running, causing this situation.
