Question

95 buick lesabre air conditioner failure

Sent to Car Experts August 01, 2006 2:39 p.m.

My 95 LeSabre with 79,xxx miles, 3.8 L had the air con go out yesterday. It lost cooling and lost freon with it shooting a cloud of vapor from under the hood. The serpentine belt is turning free. The clutch is not turning and stays outward from the compressor. The clutch pulley is turning. Do I need a new compressor/clutch assembly? Or clutch only?Any advice at this point would be helpful. Does this affect the general operation of the vehicle-should it not be driven until this problem is solved?

REPLIED Check Mark

You will have to isolate where the freon is coming from to determine whether or not the compressor needs to be replaced. The system will have to be charged back up and see where the freon is leaking, replace the leaking part. this should not affect the vehicle in any other way unless the pulley is bad on the compressor.

HI Danny, that helps explain the compressor issue. I might think that it might be not a leak from the way it blew all at once. The clutch seems to be inoperative. Could the system build up too much pressure causing the release valve to disengage the clutch and it froze up? The clutch will not seem to return to the compressor to engage it. thanks, Jimmy/Janet

ACCEPTED Check Mark

If the system blew all of the freon out it will not engage the clutch. So unless you charge it and fin the leak it is still hard to say if its the compressor. The system theoretically could build up high pressure and blow the release valve but it is highly unlikely. The clutch could lock up and fall off and it should not cause high pressure. You can get a cheap refill kit from auto -zone hook it up see if the freon leaks out.
