My father has a 1988 Buick Century with the 3.8 liter engine. He is the 2nd owner of this car and it only has 102,000 miles on it. He purchased the car 9 months ago from the original owner and the service engine soon light was coming on, and the original owner said the light came on since the car was 2 years old, so I replaced the O2 sensor, and that took care of the problem. 4 months later the light came back on and the car will run for a short time then cut out. Sometimes it will start right back up, other times it won't, and sometimes it will have a hard time starting. The exhaust gets rather extra hot and it leaves black carbon marks on the ground where it is parked. I put another O2 sensor in, replaced the fuel filter, the map sensor, and the idle air control. It doesn't help. This car for some reason when it stalls, and the ignition is still on leaves an arching sound under the hood, sounds like it's coming from under the fuel injectors, but I do not see sparks. This car does not have a distribitor. I am clueless to what is going on, and would appreiciate it if you could give me some kind of advice. Is it fixable, or is it just an old car ready for the junk yard?
