Question

Buick Century

Sent to Car Experts July 19, 2005 8:42 a.m.

My daughter has a 1989 Buick Century. After running it for a short time it won't start again. Sometimes it will just shut down while driving down the road. They have put a new starter, a new fuel pump, and also a crankcase cellaniod on it. Picked it up last night, and it's still doing the same thing. Any ideas?

When the car shuts off, does it crank OK? In other words, does it act like the battery is dead, or does the engine sound like it is turning over OK, but wont seem to run? You mention that the fuel pump and the starter have been replaced, I assume by a repair garage, but they have entirely different symptoms when they fail so thats somewhat confusing. Different problems, with different possible causes; I need a little more detail as to what exactly happens when the problem occurs to be able to offer any kind of meaningful help on this one...

Hi. When the car shuts off, it does crank. It sounds like it is turning over, but won't start. It will just "shut down" while it is being driven, and then won't start again. After several hours, it will start again, and will run for a few miles. After turning it off, it won't start again for a while. It doesn't always just shut down after being driven for about 10 miles. But lately after being driven even for shorter miles after turning it off it won't start again. Thank you! Hope this helps.
