Ford Taurus steering
Sent to Car Experts August 06 03:02 PM

1992 Ford Taurus has play in steering -- steering wheel can be moved 1 or 2 inches right or left before affecting steering -- is that a sign of near failure. I will soon take it down the Interstate at 70 MPH -- dangerous! Any easy, do-it-youself adjustment possible. I have the skill level of replacing alternators, serpentine belts, spark plugs and headlights, even a timing chain, once, on an old Pinto. -- Rick

The best thing to do is jack up the front end put it on jack stands and find out where the play is instead of guessing. You could have a tie rod ready to fall off or a ball joint ready to fall apart.Either way that amount of play should keep you off any road until investigated. If you find a problem and need help repairing it please ask.If this answers your question please click on my accept button.

Reply to Davo/diablo666's Post: Could it have anything to do with the rack or pinion, or does this vehicle have such steering?

Oh! Thank you very much for the reply that I already received. I'll jack it up and take a look, or take it to my favorite auto repair shop to have it checked out, and will probably not take it on the freeway, meanwhile.
