I have a 2002 Toyota Spyder. When I press on the gas the RPMs go up but the car doesn't go. Today I was stuck on a hill and had to take off from a dead stop - lots of smoke and the smell of something burning. I think it is my clutch - How much can I expect to pay to have it replaced?

Already Tried:
Nothing. Smoke happened today

Greetings!

It sure does sound as if your clutch is worn out and in need of replacement.

When a clutch is replaced, all of teh clutch components are replaced at teh same time; often they can even be purchased as a kit. The transmission is removed, the clutch parts are removed, and tehn the flywheel is removed as well. The flywheel is then sent out to a macnine shop to be cut flat again (it wears to fit the old clutch and you want a new surface for teh new clutch disc to bite into). There is a small round bearing pressed into the rear of the engien crankshaft that the shaft of the transmission rides in; (pilot bearing); this is removed and replaced as part of a thorough clutch replacement.

Although parts and labor prices vary considerably due to such variables as prevailing labor rates in your area, teh skill of the mechanic doing the repair, and teh brand and quality of the parts used, most clutch replacements of this type cost somewhere in the $500 to $800 range.
