Question

Ford Probe

Sent to Car Experts August 03, 2006 3:13 p.m.

I have a 1989 Ford Probe GT Turbo with 19,000 miles on it. A couple of months ago, it started "stuttering" upon acceleration, 1st gear being the worst. It felt like a clogged fuel line so I took it in and had the lines cleaned. Then the air intake hose became loose, eventually falling off, so I replaced that. However, it's still doing it When I press on the gas, it hesitates and as I said, stutters for a couple of seconds until I press on the gas harder. Then, it takes off and runs smoothly. I'm at my wits end. I know its a hard car to work on and most mechanics don't like it, but she's all I've got. I've taken excellent care of her, changing the oil regularly, etc. Just had her repainted and she's sweet. Can someone help with the problem? I sure would appreciate it. Thank you....Kayla

The motor mounts were mentioned once before. The mechanic I took it to was supposed to check everything, but I know he didn't. I was worried that it might have something to do with the turbo which would cost a small fortune to replace. Could the turbo have anything to do with it?

REPLIED Check Mark

Hello

It could be but I would first check fuel pressure and check to see if ignition is ok. Check to see if turbo is creating boost pressure. A good mechanic will check before diagnosing turbo as bad.

Hi,

What is boost pressure? Is that what shows on the gauge in the dash?

I've watched the gauge upon acceleration and it works. But I haven't watched it when the problem occurs. I'll do that tomorrow. Thank you for your time :-)
